ZTF IBE search/ztf/products/sci timeouts from Fornax terminal (frontpage + TAP OK)

Location: Fornax Science Console Terminal, Medium server, ~/p9tool, micromamba env p9 (python 3.11)

What I was doing: testing ZTF data access for p9tool-fornax 1.1.0b4 before running validation gates. doctor --online failed on IRSA IBE + S3.

Expected: .../ibe/search/ztf/products/sci?POS=... returns CSV / METADATA

Observed (Thu 17 Sep 2026 ~16:09 UTC):

curl -m 20 -I "https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/ibe/search/ztf/products/sci?POS=180,10&RESPONSEFORMAT=CSV"
# → curl: (28) Operation timed out after 20001 ms with 0 bytes received

curl -m 20 "https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/ibe/search/ztf/products/sci?FORMAT=METADATA" | head -5
# → curl: (28) Operation timed out after 20001 ms with 0 bytes received

curl -m 30 "https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/ibe/search/ztf/products/sci?POS=180,10.37&CT=csv&SIZE=0.1" | head -5
# → curl: (28) Operation timed out after 30002 ms with 0 bytes received

Same via python requests: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='irsa.ipac.caltech.edu', port=443): Read timed out (read timeout=30)

Working from same server:

curl -m 20 -I https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/
# → HTTP/2 302 location: https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/frontpage/

python -c "from p9 import wise_io; df=wise_io.query_wise_time_domain(180,10.37); print(df.shape)"
# → (12, 2)

python -c "import s3fs; fs=s3fs.S3FileSystem(anon=True); print(fs.ls('ipac-irsa-ztf/ztf/enhanced/dr24/', detail=False))"
# → ['ipac-irsa-ztf/ztf/enhanced/dr24/lc', 'ipac-irsa-ztf/ztf/enhanced/dr24/objects']

Repro:

  1. Open Terminal on Medium
  2. Run the 3 curls above

Browser: e.g. Chrome 126 on Windows — only used to launch JupyterLab, issue is server-side

Is ibe/search/ztf down, or blocked from Fornax? Thanks!

Hi @robot1447, thanks for reporting this. We’re looking into it.

This is an issue on the IRSA server end (ibe/search/ztf). We’ll let you know when it’s resolved.

@robot1447, ibe/search/ztf is working again. However, IRSA services continue to be under heavy load and response times may be slow. See the yellow banner on the website https://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/. We recommend keeping any bulk/parallel access low until that clears up.
